Pair of student-athletes garner Player of the Week honors
A pair of Heidelberg student-athletes took home Ohio Athletic Conference Player of the Week honors for their play last week. Congratulations to freshman golfer Josh Ferdon and senior All-American defensive lineman Griffin Pendry for their excellence on the course and the field.
Josh led the men’s golf team to the title at the Yellow Jacket Invitational last weekend.
He was the runner-up at the 36-hole event held at Eagle Rock Golf Club, carding a 75-78--153. He finished one stroke ahead of teammate Chace Boothman and two ahead of Connor VanSkyock and Logan Nicely. Bunched up at the top of the leaderboard, the Student Princes won the six-team event by 16 strokes.
The tournament win is believed to be HU's first since winning the same event in 2017.
Josh’s honor, the first of his career, is the first for a Heidelberg men's golfer since Kurtis Lazur received the accolade in 2017.
The resurgent Student Princes return to action this weekend at the OAC Fall Preview at River Greens Golf Course in West Lafayette, Ohio.
This is Griffin’s first OAC Player of the Week honor in his illustrious career after he played a pivotal role in The Berg's 42-21 victory over Muskingum University.
A Perrysburg native, Griffin racked up eight tackles against the Muskies. More importantly, he forced a first-quarter fumble with a vicious hit on a 3rd-and-1 play. Heidelberg converted the turnover into a touchdown six plays later. The reigning co-OAC Defensive Back of the Year, Griffin also broke up two passes.
The defensive unit shut out the visitors in the second half. In addition to Griffin's performance, Zachary Blackiston accrued 3.5 sacks, and Easton St. Clair tallied 10 tackles and an interception.
Heidelberg, now 4-1 on the season and 3-1 in OAC action, travels to No. 2 Mount Union on Saturday. Kickoff in Alliance is scheduled for a 1:30 p.m. start.
