Burghalter Award nominations open

Each spring at the Student Awards Celebration, Heidelberg University recognizes a sophomore, junior, or senior student who has best exemplified the spirit of the Good Samaritan. This award was established by Joel Burghalter, Class of 1923, in memory of his father, the Reverend Daniel Burghalter, D.D., 1892; his mother, Mrs. Daniel Burghalter; and his brother, Calvin Burghalter, 1918.

It is obvious that unselfish acts which might qualify a student for this award are often carried out under circumstances in which only a very few people know what has taken place. We are inviting all faculty, staff members, and students to nominate for consideration persons who, in their opinion, have best exemplified the spirit of the Good Samaritan during the current year.

A written statement concerning the student should support each nomination. A committee consisting of the President, the Dean of Student Affairs, the President of Student Senate, and the VP for Academic Affairs (serving as chairperson), will consider all nominations received by April 4th. Please email your nomination to Jilian Conley at jconley@heidelberg.edu.

Mr. Burghalter suggested the following guidelines to qualify for the Burghalter Memorial Award:

The broadest interpretation of Samaritanism based on Luke 10:30-37; an act of mercy, compassion, brotherly love or even friendship; an action in an emergency or sustained help during extended circumstances; spiritual aid in the lifting of morals, as well as a physical act; and acts for the benefit of one or more persons, not necessarily fellow students or faculty members, but fellow men anywhere.

There will be no restrictions as to sex, race, or creed.
