Celebrating Women in Computing

Kate Rose and Allison Farroni at their OCWiC poster presentation.

Four 'Berg students -- Kate Rose, Genevieve Boardman, Victoria Smith and Allison Farroni -- were among 200 women studying computer science who attended the Ohio Celebration of Women in Computing conference Friday and Saturday at Sawmill Creek. While at the conference, Kate and Allison gave a poster presentation, titled When IOT Attacks. Their professor, Sean Joyce, accompanied them to the conference, which is a biannual event that gives young women the opportunity to explore careers in IT, to network with other young women and to meet possible mentors. OCWiC inspires women to complete their studies in computing by expanding their awareness of career possibilities and learning from women leaders from business, industry and academia.

The students were joined by women faculty, women working in IT at major Ohio companies, national leaders in women in computing movements and a few men who are also addressing gender diversity issues in IT. A total of 40 colleges and universities and 23 companies were represented.
