Baker Summer Scholar Program returning in May

The National Center for Water Quality Research (NCWQR) at Heidelberg University is pleased to announce that the David B. Baker Summer Scholar Program will return in May 2023. In recognition of our founding director, the Baker family has generously provided summer support for two student researchers to work with NCWQR staff to conduct a student-led research project as well as work in the laboratory to learn what we do. This program supports a summer internship for two undergraduate students with half of the time spent on independent research and half of the time working in the NCWQR to support existing research (total of 40 hours per week for 12 weeks, $10/hr). Support covers a stipend, on-campus housing (or equivalent), research supplies and travel, and registration and stay for a regional conference. The internship will be the13-week period from May 15-August 11, 2023, which includes 1 week off for vacation (unpaid) and three holidays off (Memorial Day, Juneteenth, and Independence Day; also unpaid).

Students will be expected to select a research idea under the guidance of the NCWQR mentors prior to the summer internship, conduct the research during the summer period, and produce a research poster by the end of the summer to present at the Water Management Association of Ohio (WMAO) conference (or equivalent). Research topics can include chemistry, biology, data science, or a combination of topics. Ideal projects will be located in aquatic environments in which we currently work, including regional rivers and streams, wetlands, and small lakes.  Here is a list of available research projects.
