Institutionally Recognized Name Policy: Students

Heidelberg has approved an Institutionally Recognized Name (IRN) policy, available here. This means that if you have a chosen non-legal name, there are mechanisms in place to accommodate the request.

The Institutionally Recognized Name policy was created in an effort to foster a more inclusive environment for students, faculty, and staff. Not using a person's correct name can make members of our Heidelberg community feel like they are not valued. Continuously being misnamed and misgendering can create a hostile environment. This policy allows each of us to make a conscious effort to use each other's chosen name, thus continuing to achieve Heidelberg University's mission to be a community of learning that nurtures intellectual, personal, and professional development.

The policy is in its first phase offering a change to an email address. In the near future, system name displays will be available, such as OASIS. The Registrar's Office will intake requests and Multicultural Affairs will be available to assist students. The form to request an IRN is attached as well as the policy. The form is available electronically at this link.
