HU wins food drive competition for great cause

Berg students work with volunteers to sort food donations.

The HU/TU Martin Luther King Jr. Cross Town From the Heart Food Drive Collection was a huge success in its first year.

On Saturday, Jan. 21, more than 250 students from both schools knocked on doors in Tiffin to ask for food donations. Tiffin residents responded generously, giving a total of 3,117 food items and $35 in donations. The food will benefit those served by The Salvation Army, the FISH Food Pantry and the Morrison House for transitional housing.

A shout-out to the men’s and women’s golf teams, the men’s and women’s soccer teams, the baseball team, the softball team, the men’s lacrosse teams as well as Kappa Psi Omega, the Philalethean Society and Zeta Theta Psi for their participation. With 740 food items collected, the baseball Student Princes won the Heidelberg competition and will receive pizza for the team.

Overall, Heidelberg won this friendly competition between the two schools, collecting 2,336 food items.

Ben Jones, '12, returned to campus to inspire volunteers with a speech about MLK's legacy.

Perhaps it was because the ‘Berg volunteers were inspired and energized by a speech by alum Ben Jones, ’12, who brought the legacy of Martin Luther King Jr. into the present by encouraging everyone to not only embrace diversity but seek it out.

Paul Stark and the Office of Civic Engagement coordinated Heidelberg's participation in this service event.
