Series of events planned for Black History Month

The Office of Multicultural Student Affairs has planned a series of events in February in celebration of Black History Month. Everyone is invited.

• Thursday, Feb. 8 -- Black History Month Dinner, 5-7 p.m. in Hoernemann Refectory. Parkhurst will provide a delicious meal inspired by recipes from black faculty and staff.

• Tuesday, Feb. 13 -- Movie Night: Get Out, 7:00 p.m. at the Ubuntu House (21 Circular St.). Come watch the mystery/thriller directed by Jordan Peele, which he describes as “a historical biopic" about an interracial couple reaching the dating milestone of meeting the parents. At first, it seems the family's overly accommodating behavior is nervous attempts to deal with their daughter's interracial relationship, but as the weekend progresses, a series of increasingly disturbing discoveries lead Chris to a truth that he could never have imagined.

• Thursday, Feb. 15 -- Black Panther screening, departing from the Ubuntu House at 6:15 p.m. or meet at Cinemark Tiffin at 6:30 p.m. Discounted tickets ($8) for opening night are available! Sign-up is open Monday, Feb. 5, until Monday, Feb. 12. Reserve tickets in person only at the Ubuntu House between 9 a.m. and 2 p.m. or from a member of Black Student Union (Savannah Overly, soverly@heidelberg.edu; Marques Johnson, mjohnso4@heidelberg.edu; Emma Breyley, ebreyle1@heidelberg.edu; Kiera Harper, kharper@heidelberg.edu; or Cliton White, cwhite4@heidelberg.edu). The movie begins at 7 p.m.

• Saturday, Feb. 17 -- Black Issues Conference, departing for Bowling Green State University at 8 a.m. from the Ubuntu House. This 18th annual conference will address topics such as black popular music, social justice for African Americans, the Black Art Movement and much more. RSVP here or email multicultural@heidelberg.edu.

• Monday, Feb. 19 -- Tell Them We are Rising House Party, 9 p.m. at the Ubuntu House. Learn about the history of black colleges and universities in America, which have educated the architects of the freedom movements and cultivated leaders in every field. #HBCURising.

• Tuesday,  Feb. 20 -- Black History Month Trivia, 9 p.m. in Berg Bistro. Think you know about black history? Bring your best team and find out! RSVP before Feb. 24 and your team will get a free appetizer or email multicultural@heidelberg.edu.

• Thursday, Feb. 22 -- Berg Olympics, 6 p.m. at the Ubuntu House. Participate in our own version of the Winter Olympics with the 2K tournament, ginger "beer” pong and many more house games. We will be giving away over $100 in prizes, so you don’t want to miss this.

• Tuesday, Feb. 27 -- Forum: The Year That Shaped a Generation film and Q&A, leaving from the Ubuntu House at 5 p.m. for the Findlay Black Heritage Library. Come learn about Freedom Summer, a historic effort in the summer of 1964 to shatter the foundations of white supremacy in what was one of the nation's most viciously racist, segregated states.

•  Wednesday, Feb. 28 -- Black Student Union Open Mic, 6 p.m. in University Commons. Calling all singers, poets, comedians, performers. Come use your voice to celebrate black culture.
