Backstage: Seniors get glimpse of Gundlach

Allen Eiry members learn about lighting challenges during the backstage tour of Gundlach Theatre.

Tech and costume director Vanessa Cook hosted nearly 30 members of the Allen Eiry Senior Center for a behind-the-scenes tour of Gundlach Theatre last Friday. Vanessa shared with them information about the five facets of theatre design, which include set, lighting/sound, makeup, props and costumes. The group was given a demonstration for creating special effects with makeup. They also experienced a lighting challenge using M&Ms and different colored lights to show how various colors affect objects on stage. The seniors sat in on an acting class and were treated to a Hamlet monologue from Dominic Cordasco from Chris Tucci’s theatre class. The day also included a tour of the scene shop, costume shop and stage, sprinkled with tidbits of theatre jargon.
