Future veterinarians get glimpse into careers at regional conference

Four Heidelberg biology majors who have their sights set on careers in veterinary medicine, along with their professor, Dr. Pam Faber, had the unique opportunity to participate in the Midwest Veterinary Conference last weekend in Columbus.

The students – senior Cale Horsch, senior Katie Lowrey, junior Caitlyn Cross and sophomore Mckenzie Wohlford – gained insights into various career paths within the veterinary medicine field.

“The conference allowed me to network with veterinary students and veterinarians in various fields of medicine,” Caitlyn said. “This allowed me to seek new opportunities that will further help me when applying to veterinary school this year.”

Cale, whose plans include veterinary school after graduation, had a similar experience. “The Midwest Veterinary Conference was a great opportunity for me to further explore and learn about the veterinary field before I head off to veterinary school next fall,” he said.

Although the conference is geared primarily toward working veterinarians, the ‘Berg students found plenty of value on their level. Relevant session topics included Pet Animals, Holistic and Integrative Medicine, Wound Healing, Animal Behavior, Aquaculture, Public Health and Shelter Animals.

“Attending the conference has given me the opportunity to learn bout other branches of veterinary medicine and open up new potential career paths,” Mckenzie said.

The students participated in a special luncheon that allowed them to network with current veterinary graduate students, Pam explained.

Following the luncheon, they had an opportunity to speak with 10 veterinarians, including HU alum Dr. Frank Krupka ’94. They also took in an exhibition with dozens of vendors.

“This was our first time attending the conference, but I hope it becomes an annual event for our pre-vet students,” Pam said. “It was a great, informative conference.”
