SMT to host World Drumming Workshop

World-class drummer and percussionist Mark Stone to lead workshop.

The School of Music & Theatre invites the community to a drumming workshop with musician-educator and percussion expert Mark Stone on Saturday, March 17, from 9 a.m-2 p.m., in Brenneman Music Hall.

The workshop schedule is as follows:

• 9 a.m. – Exploring African Music: Introduction to the Gyil Xylophone, Dalari Drums, Aslatua Shaker and Kalimba
• 10:30 a.m. – Exploring Indian Music: Introduction to the Kanjera Drum and Solkattu
• Noon (approximately) – lunch in Hoernemann Refectory (Cost is $8)
• 12:30 p.m. – Performance by Mark Stone and Drum Circle by all participants

Stone is associate professor of music at Oakland University, where he coordinates the world music and percussion programs. He also is the arts area leader for the OU/Pontiac Initiative and a member of the Pontiac Arts Commission. He recently launched the successful Soul Food Concert Series through the OU/Pontiac Initiative.

Recognized internationally for his work in global percussion performance, composition and education, Stone has performed with the foremost musicians of Uganda, Ghana, South Africa, India, Trinidad, Ecuador and the United States. His highly original style results from innovative performance practice rooted in his deep knowledge of world traditions.

Cost to participate in the workshop is $10 for high school students, $20 for Ohio Music Education Association members and $30 for the general public. Lunch in Hoernemann Refectory is $8.
