Small but mighty: Speech Team gets Superior at national tournament

For the first time in two years, Heidelberg’s Speech Team was able to take its talents on the road to compete at the 2022 national Pi Kappa Delta Biennial Convention and Tournament. The team definitely left its mark.

The University of Central Florida in Orlando hosted the event. Heidelberg’s team came home with the highest possible rating of Superior in the Small School Sweepstakes. In all, 71 schools from across the nation competed in this year’s pinnacle tournament, which occurred from March 9-12.

Speakers for Heidelberg included senior McCartney Betz, who earned an Excellent rating in Prose Interpretation. Sophomores Kelsey Stanfield and Julia Schaefer earned Excellent ratings in Informative Speaking and Broadcasting, respectively.

"I could not be more proud of this team,” said ‘Berg Director of Forensics Dan Higgins. “They had to overcome the adversity of learning to compete on a virtual platform for two years and then brought their absolute best efforts to this in-person, national tournament. I am so thankful to have had the chance to coach these incredible students!"
