'Berg students, prof present at national Criminal Justice Conference

Dr. Sarah Lazzari and four of her students, Maddie Moore, Logyn Chamberlin, Paige Collins and Hope Kreais, are currently in Chicago, where they are presenting their research at the Academy of Criminal Justice Sciences conference.

They have been collaborating on a research project for the past year, titled The Horizon Prison Initiative (HPI). According to their abstract, HPI has been in existence for over 20 years and provides programming for incarcerated men and women, and works with them as they re-enter society.

The current study examines the impacts of the program and provides program administrators and prison officials an opportunity to determine if their goals for the program align with what the women are experiencing. The group also examined HPI at a women’s prison in Ohio. Results and implications include discussion and next steps of a larger program evaluation.

A highlight of the conference was meeting David Garlock, a client of Bryan Stevenson of the Equal Justice Initiative who appeared in the film “Just Mercy.”
