PURSUITS: Week of March 28, 2016
Dr. Rem Confesor (NCWQR) is a co-author of a new Lake Erie report, Informing Lake Erie Agriculture Nutrient Management via Scenario Evaluation, along with researchers from the University of Michigan, The Ohio State University, Texas A&M and The Nature Conservancy. The report concludes that large-scale changes to agricultural practices will be required to meet the goal of reducing levels of algae-promoting phosphorus in Lake Erie by 40 percent and will require widespread use of strong fertilizer-management practices, significant conversion of cropland to grassland and more targeted conservation efforts.
John Hoffman (Krammes Service Center) has successfully completed the Athletic Field Management course from the Department of Horticulture and Crop Science at The Ohio State University. The course addressed soils, sands, water and field renovation; warm and cool season grasses; field presentation, mowing and nutrition; and IPM pests, disease and weeds. John passed the course exam “with distinction.”
Dr. Marc O’Reilly (political science) attended the annual conference of the International Studies Association in Atlanta on March 16-17, where he presented his paper, Obama’s Gamble: Decline, Strategic Retrenchment and America’s Middle East Policy. He also participated in a professional development café.
Dr. Julie O’Reilly (communication) attended the annual conference of the Popular Culture Association/American Culture Association last week in Seattle, where she presented her paper, From Lucy & Vivian to Tina & Amy: The Evolution of Television's Comedic Power Couples. Dr. Mary Lou Kohne (business) and Dr. Stacey Pistorova (education) also attended the conference and presented papers.
While in Seattle, the group met up with Hannah Long-Higgins, '15, who's there working for the UCC. Hannah will be soon be a graduate student at Columbia University's School of Journalism in New York City, joining her brother, Andrew, '12, who is pursuing a master's degree at Columbia's School of International and Public Affairs.
