Lozano: American Dream within reach
The American Dream, while not without its challenges, is within reach, and education is the pathway to getting there. That was the message delivered by Monica Lozano at the Patricia Adams Lecture Series dinner Thursday night during her keynote, My American Story: A Family, A Business, A Dream. Lozano's family is living proof that the American Dream can become reality; the family operated La Opinión, the largest Spanish-language newspaper in the country for almost a century with Lozano the third generation to lead the organization created by her Mexican immigrant grandfather. A key to La Opinión's longevity was to be "of service" to the community. Now retired from the media world, Lozano is living that philosophy as president and CEO of the College Futures Foundation, a non-profit organization that works to provide college access to low-income and underrepresented students.
During sessions earlier in the day, Lozano shared her perspective on leadership with several business classes. She also was interviewed about her life and career by Savannah Overly in a “fireside chat” and shared advice about the importance of having strong resumés and mentors with a large group of students, faculty and staff.
