PURSUITS: Week of April 9, 2018

Dr. Justin Pruneski (biology) had an article published in the Journal of Microbiology & Biology Education in a special themed issue on Science Communication. The Tips & Tools article, titled Introducing Students to the Challenges of Communicating Science by Using a Tool That Employs Only the 1,000 Most Commonly Used Words, can be accessed here. It describes an activity he developed using Randall Munroe’s Simple Writer to help students appreciate the challenge scientists face when communicating their work with the public.

On March 31, Dr. Emily Isaacson (Honors, English) participated in the plenary roundtable, Shakespeare Beyond the Research University, at the 46th annual meeting of the Shakespeare Association of America, held in Los Angeles.

Dr. Marc O'Reilly (political science) presented a paper, titled Better Than Before: My Pedagogical Journey, at the International Studies Association conference April 7 in San Francisco.

 

Dr. Daryl Close (computer science and philosophy) presented the Faculty Development Day keynote address at Mercy College of Ohio on Jan. 5. Close’s topic was Fair Grades. The presentation included a faculty workshop based on his paper, Fair Grades. The paper was awarded the 2010  Mark Lenssen Prize for Publishing on Teaching Philosophy.
