Shake on it: Heidelberg, Calvert Elementary partner on pilot skill-building program “Berg Shake”

Berg Shake

Heidelberg University partnered with Calvert Elementary School this spring to launch a new pilot program designed to help students develop skills in professional mindsets and communication.

The program, called the “Berg Shake,” is inspired by the national competition The Amazing Shake, which focuses on preparing students for future success through real-world skill development. “Berg Shake” involves fourth- and fifth-grade students from Calvert Elementary competing in a multi-round event centered on interview skills and professional etiquette.

The first round of the competition took place at Calvert Elementary on Tuesday, April 14. During the first round, students were evaluated on fundamental skills such as handshakes, eye contact, and conversation. The students who advance will move on to a second round of more in-depth interviews, held at Heidelberg’s Frann’s Fieldhouse during the week of April 20.

Heidelberg students played an active role in the program by serving as judges and mentors throughout the competition. Their involvement provides an opportunity to experience the interview process from an evaluator’s perspective while helping younger students build confidence and skills.

“‘Berg Shake’” will demonstrate the importance of professionalism, respect, and career readiness at an early age,” said David Briggs, Career and Academic Advising Coordinator at Heidelberg and co-organizer of the competition with Shauna Hurles, Student Affairs Coordinator. “By combining competition with hands-on learning, the program aims to create a meaningful and engaging experience for all of the elementary students.”

The initiative is a collaboration between Heidelberg staff members and local partners, including Chris Chase, owner of Madison Street Tavern. Chase is supporting the program by providing gift cards and potential future opportunities for competition winners. Heidelberg University will award the top fourth- and fifth-grade competitors a renewable $1,000 annual scholarship (up to $4,000 over four years), redeemable upon future enrollment at the ’Berg.
