A Great (Books) coincidence

Alexa Hawk and Jeanna Fullom didn’t know each other until recently. Even so, they have a few things in common. They come from the same home town – Harrod, Ohio, near Lima – but went to different high schools. Come this fall, both will be students at Heidelberg.

Alexa (pictured at left) is entering her second year as a psychology and criminology double major. She’s very engaged on campus, working as an ambassador in the Admission Office last year. She also was a cheerleader.

Jeanna is the recipient of a Trustee Award, a major scholarship to attend Heidelberg, which she received based on her invited participation in Heidelberg’s annual Scholars Day competition. This fall, she plans to enter the Honors Program and major in biology and pre-med, and play golf collegiately.

Their paths crossed over books.

A year ago, Alexa received the “Be Great Book Scholarship,” which provides her $500 each semester to cover the cost of her textbooks. When the granting organization, the Smith Jones Family Foundation (SJFF), asked her to be the feature at this year’s “Be Great” banquet, she happily accepted.

When this year’s scholarship winner was announced, “Alex jumped for joy,” said her mom, Kim Hawk, the director of Student Services at Ridgemont Local Schools. It was Jeanna, who will receive the same SJFF scholarship to help cover the cost of her textbooks.

“Heidelberg has successfully recruited the (scholarship) winner for the past two years. Well done!” said Kim.

Maybe it was the Heidelberg common thread, but the girls are also connected on social media. When they met, Jeanna told Alexa that she follows her on Twitter.
