Faculty Pursuits: Week of July 24, 2023

On July 22, Sieglinde Poelzler-Kamatali (German, Spanish) presented a paper, titled Maximizing Student Engagement through Videos Using CI, at the Ohio Foreign Language Association's conference in Columbus.

During her presentation, Sieglinde talked about how students can noticeably expand their language knowledge through successful Comprehensible Input. She demonstrated this method by walking attendees through a video while applying CI. Sieglinde discussed the necessity of accompanying CI with a variety of strategies to facilitate comprehension and meaning-making, and provided suggestions for several follow-up activities for all language levels.

In particular, she emphasized that foreign language teachers should emulate the various types of input that students receive daily in the form of stories, videos, social media, etc., and underlined the importance of diversifying input sources as well as using level-appropriate material.
