'Berg names Phil Ness new VP for Advancement, Marketing

Phil Ness

Phil Ness, currently the senior vice president for development for the Indiana State University Foundation, will become the vice president for University Advancement & Marketing on Oct. 1. In his new role, Phil will be responsible for executive leadership, coordination and development in support of all existing and future philanthropic activities, including Heidelberg’s ongoing $75 million Academic Comprehensive Campaign for Excellence. He will lead a team comprised of development, alumni engagement, advancement services and marketing and communication professionals.

“During our interview process, Phil impressed everyone across the board with his experience, energy and track record of success in campaigns and other fundraising initiatives,” said President Rob Huntington. “He has a unique ability to connect and engage with alumni and friends, and develop meaningful relationships with current and prospective donors.”

“Phil is committed to teamwork, and will be a strong asset to University Advancement & Marketing specifically and the University overall. We look forward to welcoming him and his wife, Katie, to Heidelberg and the Tiffin-Seneca County community.”

In addition to serving ISU for nearly four years, Phil was a major gifts officer at Allegheny College for 11 years. He has 15 years of experience in advancement work, including successful campaigns and major gift initiatives, annual fund drives, cultivation of donor prospects, alumni relations, and corporate and public relations. He also served as the head men’s basketball coach at Allegheny College for 13 years and as an assistant basketball coach for eight years at Brown University before moving into advancement work. He received his bachelor’s degree in economics from Lafayette College and was inducted into Lafayette’s Athletic Hall of Fame in 1991.

“I am thrilled to join the Heidelberg family and President Huntington’s team,” Phil said. “I was so impressed with Heidelberg’s beautiful campus and its commitment to student success, but most of all by the passion and excitement of everyone I met during my time on campus. I’m very anxious to join in the excellent work that goes on at Heidelberg University with a great staff of dedicated professionals."
