'Belle of Amherst' explores life of Emily Dickinson

The School of Music & Theatre kicks off its 2017-18 performance season on Friday, Sept. 8, with the one-woman show, The Belle of Amherst, which explores the secrets, eccentricities and passions of the famous poet Emily Dickinson.

The Belle of Amherst, made famous by legendary actress Julie Harris, tells the story of Dickinson’s life. Met with surprises at every turn, Dickinson puts pen to paper to overcome daunting challenges. At times, she is compelled to “stop the world” as creativity starts – and her poems come to life in the unique voice that defied the conventions of her time. In her own words, Dickinson said, “Every town must have its local character, and that’s what I am!”

Visiting guest artist Jennifer Burke will be the featured performer.

Show time is 7:30 p.m. in Gundlach Theatre. General admission tickets are $10 and subscriber tickets are $5. Tickets are available at www.gundlachtheatre.org.
