Seeing triple: Three Dr. Closes on campus

Three Dr. Closes (L-R): Meredith, Daryl and Hilary

Students in Dr. Daryl Close’s Philosophy 217 Bioethics class may have been seeing triple last Friday. His daughter, Dr. Meredith Close, was a guest lecturer in the class, presenting on the topic Cases of Pediatric Informed Consent.

After receiving her bachelor’s degree from Mount Holyoke College and her M.D. degree from the University of Arizona, Meredith currently is working as a pediatric resident, PGY-2, at Helen DeVos Children’s Hospital in Grand Rapids, Mich.

“When Meredith learned that I was teaching Bioethics this fall, she volunteered to plan a Friday vacation day and visit the class,” says dad Daryl.

But he and Meredith weren’t the only Dr. Closes on campus that day. Daughter Dr. Hilary Close, who is an assistant professor of ocean sciences at Rosenstiel School of Marine and Atmopsheric Science at the University of Miami, made a trip home, too. She had been evacuated from her south Florida home because of Hurricane Irma. Hilary is a graduate of Oberlin College and received her master’s and Ph.D. degrees from Harvard University.

While at Mohawk High School, the Close sisters took classes at Heidelberg through the Post Secondary Enrollment Options program (now called College Credit Plus).

How nice that they were able to unite at Heidelberg for an afternoon!
