Back the Brrrrg successful despite challenges

Nothing about the 2020 Back the Berg Golf Outing was easy. Twice postponed because of COVID-19 precautions, the event was pushed to last Sunday. The 120 golfers at the event were forced to battle wind, rain, and chilly temperatures -- turning Back the Berg into Back the Brrrrrg. Those who stuck it out, however, were rewarded with sunny skies for their final few holes.

In the end, the process to determine a winner also proved challenging. Two groups tied for first with a score of 56 (-16). Using a scorecard playoff, the top honors went to the team of Matt Palm, Jimmy Williams, Alex Rutter and Matt Decker. Matt's team birdied No. 9, the third-hardest hole at Mohawk Golf & Country Club.

For Palm and Williams, their names will be added to the Todd Bertermann Memorial Trophy for the second time (2015).

There were no team skins earned during the event.

On six prize holes, the proxy winners were:

3: Derek Schmid (Closest in one shot)
6: Sharla Cline (Longest Putt)
8: Brian Cline (Longest Drive)
11: Jozey Hill (Closest in two shots)
15: John Verdes (Closest in one shot)
18: Davey Briggs (Longest Putt)

The Sealed Bid Auction was also a success, bringing in additional fundraising money for The "H" Association.

Carmie's BBQ & Grill and The Old Fort Banking Company were title sponsors for the outing, which began in 2004.

The Heidelberg Athletics community is grateful for all of the support from the golfers and everyone involved with the Back the Berg Golf Outing.
