Kami Stanfield, Cale Horsch win Snyder Prize; Sarah Lazzari is Faculty Member of the Year

Although the Student Awards Ceremony is a celebration, it is also a bittersweet moment. It marks the beginning of the end and the start of lots of goodbyes, but it’s also a great opportunity to honor a year of awesome accomplishments.

“This marks the beginning of the end of the academic year. It’s the beginning to celebrating our students’ accomplishments, the beginning of preparations for Baccalaureate and Commencement and the beginning of saying goodbye to those of you who are graduating and those of you who have outgrown us in a sense,” said Provost Dr. Courtney DeMayo Pugno, who emceed the event. “It’s bittersweet for all of us.”

“It’s a time when students are getting tired of faculty nagging and faculty are feeling the need for a break,” she said. “But that’s what makes us a community and a family.”

On Friday, the community gathered for the Student Awards Celebration – a moment that truly reminds us of the ties that bind us and make Heidelberg our Sweet Alma Home. Courtney added that the celebration is also a time for students to thank faculty members “who always showed up for you” and for faculty to reflect on “the awesome human beings we have helped mentor.”

Kami Stanfield and Cale Horsch are this year’s recipients of the Daniel J. and W.J.K. Snyder Prize, awarded to the top graduating seniors who the faculty judged to have excelled during their four years at Heidelberg in leadership based on character and scholarship. Yaniah Powell is this year’s recipient of the Burghalter Memorial Award, given to a student who best exemplifies the spirit of the Good Samaritan.

Taylor Ratliff was chosen to give the student remarks at the celebration. She titled her talk “Be Where Your Feet Are.” In a year filled with growth, energy and motion, Taylor encouraged those gathered to take time to slow down, breathe, and appreciate the moment.

“This moment, right now, is fleeting. … There will be hugs, laughter, perhaps a few tears shed, and goodbyes said. But before all that, just be here,” Taylor said. “Slowing down does not mean giving up or being complacent. It is not about abandoning ambition or disengaging from life’s challenges. Instead, it is about creating the space to live with intention. To be present and truly engaged with the world around you and the people who fill it.

“To find joy not just in the hustle, but in the moments that rest between the tasks, the rush, and all of the noise.”

Finally, she added, “I hope when you feel joy, you let yourself linger in it. And I hope when life feels heavy, you let yourself slow down. Because life isn’t measured by how much we accomplish. It’s measured by how deeply we appreciate it.
