Montague piano artist to give concert

Juilliard-trained pianist and composer Alexander Malikov returns to Heidelberg on Friday, Nov. 11, as the School of Music & Theatre’s Montague guest artist. His concert at 7 p.m. in Brenneman Music Hall is part of the New Music Festival season.

Malikov’s program will unite elements of the past and present as he presents two landmark keyboard works by Bach and Beethoven, Partita No. 2 and Sonata No. 32 in C minor op 111. The program also will feature recent works for piano by contemporary Canadian composer Howard Bashaw. Malikov’s set of” Manhattan Pieces” will round out the recital.

Malikov has performed extensively around Canada and the United States. He began playing piano at age 7 in his native Russia. Three years later, his family immigrated to Canada, where he continued his piano studies. An award-winning pianist, he has performed solo and with ensembles. Malikov is a graduate of the Oberlin Conservatory with a bachelor’s degree in piano performance as well as the Juilliard School, where he received his master’s degree. Currently, he is finishing his artist diploma program at the Cleveland Institute of Music.

The concert is free and open to the public.
