From spreadsheet queen to sleeping in: Barb Gabel retires after 42+ years
Barb Gabel is such a quitter. The sash she was wearing on Tuesday – her last day before she officially retired – confirmed it.
After an incredible 42-year run as Heidelberg’s business officer, Barb is hanging up her calculator for good. And if anyone has earned it, it’s Barb.
Her sendoff was classic 'Berg: colleagues past and present gathered in University Hall — the very place she’s reported to since she was 18 — to celebrate her iconic career and wish her well.
Of course, Barb was supposed to retire back on June 30, when the fiscal year wrapped up. But in classic Barb style, she agreed to stick around three extra months to make sure the new Business Office team was ready to roll. Because that’s just who she is.
One thing’s for certain: Barb never quit on Heidelberg students. They were her major focus for more than four decades.
“One of the most endearing things about Barb is her commitment and dedication to the University and to students,” said President Rob Huntington. “She worked her butt off for both.”
That commitment started with a fluke. Back in the day, Barb had stopped by to see her friend and mentor, former VP Jeannine Curns. But when the phones started ringing, Jeannine asked her to pick up. Barb shyly answered, Good afternoon, Heidelberg College.
“I made it work. The next thing I know, I’m hired,” Barb joked.
Fast-forward four decades. Barb worked her way from the bottom up, always figuring things out, always protecting Heidelberg’s purse strings as if they were her own. “Great work is always personal,” Rob said. “And Barb took it personally.”
As for what’s next? Barb is trading spreadsheets for sleeping in. She’s looking forward to “no alarm clock,” projects around the house, fun and relaxation, and plenty of time at the lake.
Her parting words to colleagues? “You’ll survive without me. There’s a good staff coming behind me. But please, please … keep the purse strings tight!”
