A milestone that matters: HU receives maximum 10-year accreditation reaffirmation

Heidelberg University HLC Accredidation

The Higher Learning Commission (HLC) has reaffirmed Heidelberg's accreditation for another 10 years, the maximum term awarded, extending it through the 2035-2036 academic year.

The reaffirmation follows an 18-month self-study that engaged every area of the University. The process concluded with a site visit from an HLC evaluation team in February.

The reaffirmation is welcome news, according to Heidelberg’s senior leadership.

"We are proud to have been accredited by HLC since 1913,” said Heidelberg President Rob Huntington. “Receiving affirmation of our ongoing accreditation from the HLC is validation of our commitment to academic quality, student success, and our culture of continuous improvement.”

“HLC’s decision reflects the dedication of our faculty, staff, and leadership to provide an educational experience that meets rigorous standards while preparing our students to thrive in their professions and communities,” added Provost Courtney DeMayo Pugno, who led the reaccreditation process on campus. "HLC’s decision confirms that Heidelberg delivers on its mission with integrity and an intentional focus on student success."

Throughout the process, a steering committee comprised of faculty and staff assessed evidence across four HLC criteria:

•    Mission
•    Integrity: Ethical and Responsible Conduct
•    Teaching and Learning for Student Success
•    Sustainability: Institutional Effectiveness, Resources, and Planning

“It was absolutely inspiring to see this campus pull together for this process,” Courtney said.

As part of the accreditation cycle, Heidelberg will complete a standard mid-cycle comprehensive evaluation during the 2029-2030 academic year. The review will emphasize Resource Base and Sustainability, reflecting the University's ongoing work to strengthen institutional assessment, transparency, and the student experience.

What does accreditation mean for students?

Reaffirmation of accreditation is a testament to the strength of Heidelberg’s academic programs and the University’s commitment to student success. Accreditation also supports the value of a Heidelberg degree, eligibility for federal financial aid, and confidence among employers and graduate schools.

“It means that we continue to meet rigorous standards for quality that our students expect and deserve, while fulfilling our core mission to prepare them to lead lives of purpose with distinction,” Courtney said.

“As the Opportunity Makers, we are proud of this milestone and even more energized by the opportunities it creates for our students and our future,” Rob added.
