The long and winding road to Alumni Weekend

Burt Darmour, '57

No, Burt Darmour isn't crazy -- although he gets asked frequently if he is! It's a logical question for the 82-year-old alum who returned to Heidelberg from his home in Boulder, Colorado, to celebrate his 60th class reunion this week. But Burt , a 1957 grad, took a circuitous route to get here. No planes, trains or automobiles. Nope. Burt rode his bicycle the 1,300 miles back to campus and arrived in 20 days. His odyssey took him through hundreds of miles of cornfields and a lot of small towns where some days, the best food he could find was at a gas station. Despite dealing with two surgically repaired knees, he arrived in good condition, Burt's wife, Sylvia, flew in and joined him on Wednesday. Now, they're ready to let the Alumni Weekend celebration begin.
