'Berg sustainability initiatives get a boost

In August, the Heidelberg Sustainability Committee received an $8,750 grant from the Ottawa-Sandusky-Seneca Solid Waste District. With 20 percent matching funds from the Inter-Hall Residence Council, the total grant exceeded $10,000.

With the largest OSS grant to date, 500 small recycling containers were distributed to campus student rooms last week. Each residence hall room in Brown, France, Talmage, Miller, Williard and King Hall received a recycling container to kick off the new initiatives outlined in the grant.  As the improvements continue, all university apartments, houses and dorm rooms on will have a separate bin for recyclable materials.

500 blue recycling bins went out to campus student rooms last week.

“I’m excited that we are expanding sustainability efforts by providing all residence hall rooms with recycling containers,” said Mark Zeno, assistant dean of Student Affairs for Campus Life. “As we continue to provide more ways to improve our community through these initiatives, I look forward to seeing the next phase of our efforts.”

Zeno notes how helpful OSS Director Tim Wasserman and Assistant Director Amy Drummer have been throughout the grant process.

The campus community can drop off their recyclable materials in the designated Republic Services recycling dumpsters clearly marked with the sustainability logo. Allowing easier access to recycling helps to continue the campus-wide initiative to work toward a more green environment.
