King Day events to address service, race, poverty

Heidelberg faculty, staff, students and the community will come together Monday for a series of events to celebrate the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., to examine issues important to Dr. King and to engage in service.

A series of events is planned for the afternoon of Monday, Jan. 18 -- the Martin Luther King Jr. Day holiday. The events kick off at 1 p.m. with a special presentation by Kimberly Brazwell, special assistant to the president for diversity initiatives at Columbus State Community College, around the topics of community service, race relations and poverty.

Brazwell has more than 15 years of experience in educational administration, diversity and inclusion efforts, wellness advocacy and community building. She is an alumna of Ohio University and has her master’s degree in educational policy and leadership from The Ohio State University.

As part of the presentation, there will be an opportunity to have further conversations around the topics of service, race and poverty in small groups of eight.

A service fair will be held from 2-2:30 p.m. Representatives from service agencies from the Tiffin community will be on hand to talk about volunteer needs and opportunities.

Beginning at 2:30 p.m., ‘Berg and community volunteers will join efforts to build 10,000 meals in an hour to support Stop Hunger Now. The organization provides meals for refugee camps, schools and crisis response organizations around the world.
