Full STEAM Ahead for Education Summit

The seventh annual Education Summit will have a different flavor this year. Presentations will feature 'Berg faculty and local educators and the ways they are partnering to engage their students in STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Math).

This year’s summit, to be held March 14-15, is built around the theme Full STEAM Ahead: Engaging Students in Learning. The theme is based around the TEACH-n-STEAM partnership in which Heidelberg education faculty support local classroom teachers as they develop and implement curriculum in the STEAM content areas. The partnership has grown from one Tiffin City Schools teacher last year to six this year, with great potential for continued growth.

Presentations will demonstrate practical applications that future teachers can use when they launch their own careers. The keynote on Thursday (March 14) will feature four Heidelberg faculty members: Dr. Lindsey Haubert and Dr. Stacey Pistorova, who have led the TEACH-n-STEAM initiative, and Stephen Svoboda and David Cotter from the School of Music & Theatre, speaking about creative ways to incorporate the arts into STEAM classrooms.

Lindsey and Stacey will be assisted in their presentation by local teachers Jenny Gressman and Samantha Demmerly, who are participating in the TEACH-n-STEAM initiative with Heidelberg faculty.

On Friday (March 15), the second day of the summit will feature breakout sessions with Heidelberg students and the keynote speakers, as well as elementary teacher Kristie Badik, who graduated from Heidelberg with bachelor’s and master’s degrees in education, and special education teacher Andrea Thiessen.

The topics will carry over from the keynote presentation the previous day and also focus on classroom environments that engage all students in learning. The breakout sessions will be followed by a Q&A discussion with all of the presenters.

The welcome and the keynote presentation will be at 4 p.m. Thursday, March 14, in Wickham Great Hall (Campus Center). The breakout sessions and panel discussion on Friday, March 15, begin at 9 a.m. in the Campus Center.

The Education Summit is sponsored in part by the Sarah Welsh Scholarship Fund and the Swinehart Family Endowed Chair in Education.
