MAC students attend LGBTQ conference at UT

Future counselors explore issues related to LGBTQ community and how to become advocates for this population.

On April 12, a group of 19 Heidelberg Master of Arts in Counseling student traveled to the University of Toledo inaugural Conference on LGBTQ Issues. Heidelberg attendance more than doubled the number of representatives from any other university.

These student advocates and future counselors attended two sessions of diverse presentations put on by presenters ranging from doctoral candidates in the counseling educator program at UT to students in the graduate social work program, the graduate American literature program and the undergraduate social work program.

These presentations explored the history of the LGBTQ community, legislative and domestic issues that affect the LGBTQ community and how to advocate for the members of this population through ally-ship and becoming active participants in the legislative and domestic realms that currently impair this community of people.

The keynote speaker, Jared S. Rose, Ph.D., LPCC-S, NCC, EMDRC empowered these student, faculty and professionals to become aware of issues surrounding the LGBTQ community and become part of the movement for equality and justice.
