First group of students trained in Green Dot
In the Summer of 2019, the Green Dot Implementation Team started sharing information about Green Dot. The Green Dot strategy is a bystander approach for the prevention of power-based personal violence. Power-based personal violence is a form of violence where an individual asserts power, control, or intimidation over another to cause harm. A Green Dot is any choice that counters or displaces a red dot of violence and reduces the likelihood that someone will be hurt. This is a national prevention training program being implemented at universities, armed services, communities, and schools across the country, and now here at Heidelberg University. A quick recap of the movement, plus the exciting next steps for Green Dot at Heidelberg:
Timeline: In July 2019, the Implementation Team was trained to bring Green Dot to Heidelberg. The implementation team is led by Ronee Rice, and includes Scott Donaldson, Morgan Harrigan, Dennis LoConti, Meagan McBride, Rachel Huth and John Sharp.
Fall 2019: Approximately 100 faculty and staff from all areas of campus have been trained in Green Dot.
January 26, 2020: The first round of student influencers engaged in a five-hour bystander training. The first students on our campus to be trained in Green Dot, a program used by the U.S. Air Force, Notre Dame, Wittenberg, Kent State, Washington University, University of Kentucky, Texas A & M and many more.
A green dot is any behavior, choice or action that promotes safety for everyone and communicates utter intolerance for sexual violence, dating/domestic/violence and stalking. A green dot is intervening in a high-risk situation ... looking out for your friends at the party, a bar or other high-risk situation ... hanging a prevention poster in your room ... getting your student organization trained on bystander intervention ... wearing your green dot gear. A green dot is simply your individual choice at any given moment to make our campus safer.
COMING UP: THE FIRST CAMPUSWIDE GREEN DOT ACTIVITY
