8th annual Education Summit coming March 19-20

School of Education is finalizing plans for the eighth annual Education Summit Thursday and Friday, March 19-20.

This year’s theme is Curiosity: How to Develop Meaningful and Effective Learning. The keynote speaker will be Dr. Wendy Ostroff, a developmental and cognitive psychologist and professor at the Hutchins School of Liberal Studies at Sonoma State University, a seminar-based program that prepares prospective teachers and emphasizes critical reading, writing and thinking. The author of the books Understanding How Young Children Learn: Bringing the Science of Child Development to the Classroom and Cultivating Curiosity in K-12 Classrooms: How to Promote and Sustain Deep Learning, Ostroff has been designing and teaching interdisciplinary courses on cognitive science and neuroscience, learning and education for the past 20 years. She is passionate and innovate about emergent pedagogies and state-of-the-art teacher education. Her keynote presentation will be at 4 p.m. Thursday, March 19, in Wickham Great Hall. Also serving as guest presenters for one of a series of workshop sessions on Friday will be three Tiffin City Schools elementary teachers who are partnering with the Heidelberg School of Education in the Martha Holden Jennings STEAM teaching grant, as well as serving as field experience mentor teachers to Heidelberg education majors. Jennifer Gressman, a third-grade teacher at Krout Elementary School, Leigh Alvarado, a kindergarten teacher at Washington Elementary School, and Lindsay Newlove, a third grader at Krout, will present a workshop Friday morning (March 20) at 9 a.m. in Wickham Great Hall.

Current Heidelberg education majors who serve as the School of Education’s recruiting team are assisting with the Education Summit: sophomores Samantha Blake, Alexis Calhoun, Madison Curtner, Sarah Oney, Brandon Reed, Madeline Szawranskyi and juniors Anna Cavanaugh, Abraham Patterson and Autumn Simpson.
