Class of '20 banner unveiled

Although it didn’t get its traditional unveiling, the Class of ‘20 banner is ready to take its rightful place in Heidelberg’s history. A group of 14 now-graduates from the Class of ’20 combined their talents to plan the design of the banner before COVID-19 interrupted their final semester.

COVID-19 also caused the cancellation of graduation, so the class didn’t have the traditional opportunity to present their banner to President Huntington at commencement rehearsal and then debut it during the procession down Greenfield Street back in May.

But they made the best of it. “Our hope was to have a hand in the creation of the Class of 2020’s physical mark on our Sweet Alma Home,” explained committee member Allison Krebs.

Members of the committee decided on the banner’s overall shape and then created design proposals. The entire Class of 2020 was sent a poll of various designs and the winning design was ready to come to life.

Enter seamstress extraordinaire Angie Cook, the mother of ‘Berg alums Brittany Cook ’13 and Brianne (Cook) Avsec, ’13, MAC ’15. For the past several years, Angie has taken each class’s design ideas and beautifully brought them to life for perpetuity. She did the same for the Class of ’20 this spring.

For the 2020-21 academic year, the class banner will be proudly displayed in a glass case on the main level of the Campus Center, until it can make its official debut down Greenfield Street during Alumni Weekend in June 2021.

The Class of 2020’s legacy is now solidified in Heidelberg’s history.

Congratulations on a job well done to banner committee members Maddie Branham, Emma Breyley, Jennifer Burgei, Kaitlynn Esquibel, Meriah Estremera, Madison Flory, Megan Gwirtz, Allison Krebs, Casey Moore, Gabrielle Osterman, Hannah Petitti, Paul Reese, Grace Turner and Brenda Waite.
