'Berg study abroad earns Seal of Excellence

Several years ago, then-Provost Dr. David Weininger challenged the Heidelberg campus to double the number of students with study abroad experiences by the year 2020. Although now retired, Dr. Weininger would be pleased to know that the challenge was accepted – and achieved.

After a five-year “banner” period that included multiple summer trips by the Concert Choir to Europe and the Theatre Department to Scotland, as well as faculty-led trips and other experiences abroad, Heidelberg is now recognized by Generation Study Abroad with its Seal of Excellence.

“It is immensely important for our students to have these life-changing opportunities,” said Julie Arnold, director of Intercultural Student Affairs. “We are indebted to our committed faculty for their time and to our alumni for their donations; without these, this achievement wouldn’t have been possible.”

Generation Study Abroad said it is pleased to partner with Heidelberg in making the Seal of Excellence designation. “We are grateful for the significant contribution to our mission of increasing and diversifying the U.S. student participation in study abroad and are thrilled to recognize Heidelberg University with the IIEE Seal of Excellence,” said Lindsay G. Calvert, lead with IIEE Network.

Heidelberg is one of only two Ohio Athletic Conference schools to receive this designation. The university joins 18 other Generation Study Abroad “commitment partners” in receiving the Seal of Excellence in 2020 and over 100 institutions nationwide. The Seal of Excellence indicates the institutions have met their pledge goals and are helping the GSA mission to make study abroad more accessible and inclusive for all students.
