Congressman gets learning tour of Heidelberg

Congressman Bob Latta spent the day in Tiffin Thursday, learning about all the community’s assets. He swung by Heidelberg – a key driver in the local economy – as part of his tour and spent about an hour learning about the campus.

Ohio’s proposed redistricting would return Seneca County to Latta’s Fifth Congressional District.

President Rob Huntington provided some Heidelberg historical insight in the lobby of University Hall, sharing the PALS 10th anniversary event and visit of Laura and Barbara Bush, noting some of the key names on the Builders & Benefactors Wall and the alumni photo of alumnus and Tiffin Mayor Aaron Montz, ’08

He gave Latta a brief, brisk campus tour to highlight many of the university’s campus initiatives as part of Heidelberg’s $36.5 million USDA Rural Development loan used to refinance existing debt. Rob pointed out the recently completed France Residence Hall restoration / renovation project, the Main Street Townhomes, the GEM Center as accomplishments through the loan program.

The history lesson continued, when Rob noted that – standing in the University Hall parking lot – you can see Heidelberg’s three oldest and most historic buildings from one spot: Founders Hall, University Hall and the Octagon House. He also shared the story of returning home football games to campus and the genesis of Hoernemann Stadium.

Returning to the warmth of Campus Center, Rob, along with Chris Abrams, Leslie Erwin, Ashley Helmstetter, Jonathan Bordner and Angie Giles, shared with Latta some of the highlights of Heidelberg’s academic and co-curricular programs: the top academic programs, the Heidelberg Four-Year Graduation Guarantee, the Heidelberg Tuition Guarantee, HYPE Career Ready® and the PlusOne Advantage® Tuition-Free Scholarship Program.

The congressman shared his desire to work toward strengthening Ohio’s workforce by keeping the state’s young people at home for their careers.

Latta’s Tiffin visit was organized by the Tiffin Seneca Economic Partnership. TSEP’s new development coordinator, Adam Gillmor, accompanied him to Heidelberg.
