Berg's new AD returning to Ohio roots

On Thursday, Heidelberg University Dean of Student Affairs Chris Abrams announced that Greg Cooper, currently the Director of Athletics and Campus Recreation at Indiana University Kokomo, will be joining the Heidelberg University family as the next Director of Athletics in early May.

"The rich history mixed with a passionate coaching staff and dedicated student-athletes make this a great fit," said Cooper. "I see immense potential in the future of Heidelberg and I hope to continue to propel the department and university forward."

Cooper brings extensive experience in developing coaches and staff to bring out the full potential in all of their student-athletes. At IU Kokomo, he was instrumental in the growth and vision for a new athletic department, which now includes 14 varsity teams and a growing campus recreation program. Under his leadership, IU Kokomo teams have won 10 conference championships, made eight national tournament appearances, six Round of 32 appearances and three Sweet Sixteen appearances in six years since he became AD in 2015.

Most importantly, IU Kokomo has achieved a 90% student-athlete retention rate year over year and more than 82% of student-athletes have graduated in four years or less.

"Heidelberg is very excited to welcome Greg home to Ohio," said Abrams. "He brings a wealth of knowledge and experience that we know will help move forward the student-athlete experience at Heidelberg for years to come."

In addition, Cooper is a proven fundraiser who is experienced with engaging alumni and others in the importance of giving back. He is skilled in event management as well. Ultimately, he believes in building strong relationships to create effective communication across the board while keeping the student-athlete experience at the forefront of all activities.

"I want to thank President Huntington, Dean Abrams and the search committee for this opportunity," said Cooper.  "I am very excited to return to my roots in Ohio, the Ohio Athletic Conference and Division III."

Prior to his role at IU Kokomo, Cooper served as Associate Athletic Director at St. Edward's University in Austin, Texas. He received his bachelor's degree in Sport Management from Otterbein University and his master's degree in Sport Management from Slippery Rock University.
