Pursuits: Week of May 30, 2016

Dr. Bill Reyer (English) served as poetry judge for the National Amateur Press Association's laureate awards for poetry.  In addition, his poem Mu  無 received the Latimer Award in Nature Poetry from the Galaxy of Verse journal out of Garland, Texas.

Dr. Justin Pruneski (biology) was among 21 instructors selected to participate in the Flipped Case Study Workshop at SUNY University at Buffalo May 24-26, 2016. The workshop was part of a National Science Foundation-funded grant to develop case studies and associated videos for use in a flipped classroom approach to teaching General Biology. Justin worked with the group to develop an introductory video for his case study, called A Cure for Cancer? The video is being prepared for publication in the case collection at the National Center for Case Study Teaching in Science.

Dr. Susan Carty (biology emerita) participated in the national parks "BioBlitz" at Cuyahoga Valley National Park outside of Cleveland on May 20. She was the designated scientist examining algae and found about 65 taxa from three ponds and two lakes. A bioblitz tries to identify all living organisms in a specific location.
