Student Commencement speakers announced

Congratulations to McCartney Betz and Emma Baughman, who have been selected to represent their senior class with remarks at the Student Awards Celebration on April 22 and Commencement on May 15, respectively.

McCartney has titled her speech “Imposters? Sus.” It’s a nod to Among Us, a game that took off during the pandemic, in which there are “imposters” and other players have to figure out their identities. Her speech covers her experience at Heidelberg, particularly in regard to Imposter Syndrome.  She describes her speech as “an inspirational pep talk about relying on others and trusting oneself.”

Emma’s speech title is “On Being and Becoming.” In it, she reflects on her four years at Heidelberg and the culminating lessons from both inside and outside the classroom that “shed light on who I am and who I’d like to become.” Emma will talk about the distinction between doing and being, and the idea that there is no timeline for how we tackle life and the many ways that Heidelberg students are capable of standing the test of time by not standing still.

Additionally, graduating Master of Arts in Counseling student Alyssa (Eckley) Kontak has been selected by the graduate counseling faculty to represent graduate students with remarks during Commencement. She has titled her speech “We’re All Just Winging It.”
