Internship Chronicles, Chapter 17: Memphis Cutshall

Chapter 17: "The Legal Game of Chess"

Memphis Cutshall is a criminology major with a psychology minor from Fresno, Ohio. He plans to enter the national guard after graduation, and pursue a career in law enforcement as a police officer. It is important to Memphis that he helps others and makes a positive impact on the community around him, wherever he finds himself. This semester, Memphis is interning with the Seneca County Drug and Task Force, where he gets to have hands-on experience within his goal career.

How did you find your internship, or how did the internship find you?

I heard about this internship from a friend and my advisor Sarah Lazzari.

What did you expect from your internship initially?

From stories told from my friend and advisor, I had a good idea about what I would be getting into. But so far the internship has exceeded my expectations, as an intern I am able to be pretty hands on. 

What really happens in your day-to-day work?

In my day to day we either are serving search warrants, doing investigations, tracking potential drug dealers, checking evidence and/or watching footage. 

What connections have you made?

I have made connections with officers who have provided me with information from their experience. I can learn from what they not only currently do but have done in the past that they wish they have done differently. Ethics in law enforcement are important when communicating with various people daily so watching how they interact and solve dilemmas is influential. 

What is the most valuable thing you’ll bring back to the classroom after this experience?

Communication skills and hands-on experience I believe will allow me to handle situations professionally. 

If your internship was a book or a chapter in a book, what should it be titled?

“The Legal Game of Chess.”
