Education Summit to address at-risk students

Dr. Joe Hendershott

The School of Education is finalizing plans for the fourth annual Education Summit March 23-24.

This year’s theme is Meeting ALL Students’ Needs and features Dr. Joseph Hendershott, a renowned educator and consultant on at-risk and “wounded” students. Hendershott is a co-founder of Hope 4 the Wounded Educational Seminars. He offers educators, counselors and other professionals an opportunity to understand the wounded student and develop strategies to use when working with them.

Hendershott has authored two books, Reaching the Wounded Student (2008) and 7 Ways to Transform the Lives of Wounded Students (2016). He was named the National Crystal Star award winner for 2015 through the National Dropout Prevention Center/Network, which recognizes each year an individual who has contributed outstanding work in the area of dropout prevention and intervention. He was also named the recipient of the 2016 Professor Raymond W. Bixler Award through Ashland University, which recognizes excellence in education.

Hendershott's keynote address will be at 4 p.m. Wednesday, March 23, in Gundlach Theatre.

Educators and students will have additional opportunities to hear Hendershott. His second presentation, Identifying and Understanding the Wounded Student, will be at 10 a.m. Thursday, March 24, in Wickham Great Hall.

Other teacher scholars who will be part of the summit include Dr. Lisa DaVia Rubenstein, assistant professor of educational psychology at Ball State University, presenting on Three Ways Schools Fail Gifted Learners and What You Can Do About It (9:10 a.m. Thursday, March 24, in Wickham Great Hall), and Dr. Amber Baughman from Heidelberg’s Graduate Counseling Program.

Concluding the summit will be a panel discussion featuring all three presenters at 11 a.m. Thursday in the Great Hall.

The summit strives to engage pre-service and in-service teachers with leading and distinguished educators in the major issues, trends and teaching practices within the profession.
