Heidelberg University’s New Music Festival & Symposium returned after eleven years with a vibrant three-day showcase of contemporary composition, performance, and scholarly presentations. A diverse range of works was featured as guest artists and students brought new music to life, with performers including andPlay, Michael Hall, Neonautica, Shi-An Costello, and Tower Duo, highlighting global composers alongside Heidelberg students and alumni.

The keynote address was given by renowned composer Stacy Garrop, who emphasized that building a successful career in music requires talent, strategic thinking, and drive. Drawing on her own journey, she encouraged musicians to define their mission, set clear goals, and pursue meaningful projects. She underscored the importance of work ethic, savvy business skills, and a willingness to learn, urging the audience to consider, “Will I have regrets later in life for not taking a chance right now and believing in myself?” Emphasizing the importance of connection and collaboration, Garrop highlights that clarity, persistence, and self-confidence are essential to a fulfilling career.

Tiffin Mayor Lee Wilkinson presented the Heidelberg University New Music Association with an official mayoral proclamation recognizing the university’s commitment to creativity, collaboration, and cultural enrichment.

The festival’s return, the result of two years of planning by the Heidelberg New Music Association (HNMA), renews Heidelberg University’s commitment to new music and community enrichment. While the organization’s student leadership transitions from Cameron Gaietto to Sarah Jewell, the festival will continue under the guidance of Director of Music, Assistant Professor of Composition and Theory, Matthew Kennedy, whose leadership ensures its long-term vision and stability. Looking ahead to its next festival in 2028, HNMA remains dedicated to championing innovation, collaboration, and meaningful student opportunities.
