Tradition taking root: 'Berg earns 3rd consecutive Tree Campus designation

For the third consecutive year, Heidelberg has been designated a Tree Campus Higher Education. HU, along with several other campuses and a host of communities were honored at an awards ceremony last week in Maumee.

Tree Campus awards are presented annually by the Ohio Department of Natural Resources, Division of Forestry, in conjunction with Arbor Day. Attending the ceremony to represent Heidelberg were Jakob Boehler, Field Manager for the National Center for Water Quality Research and Sandusky River Watershed Coalition Coordinator, and Dr. Doug Kane, assistant professor of ecology. Tiffin Mayor Lee Wilkinson and several members of the Tiffin Shade Tree Commission also attended to represent Tiffin.

Since its first Tree Campus designation, Heidelberg has sustained a program to manage our campus trees effectively, connect with the community beyond the campus to foster healthy urban forests, and engage students through service-learning opportunities.

To achieve the title of Tree Campus, Heidelberg has sustained efforts to maintain and improve a comprehensive tree management program. has continued to meet these standards:

•    Have an active Tree Advisory Committee
•    Have an active Campus Tree Management Plan
•    Host an annual Arbor Day observance
•    Implement a service-learning project related to trees

Next year, Tiffin will host the Northwest Ohio Tree City USA awards program.
