Award-winning science educator, alumna to deliver Opening Convocation address

Nearly two decades after beginning her journey as a Heidelberg student, Ashlie (Burkhart) Gowitzka '06 will return to her Sweet Alma Home to help officially launch the 2026-27 academic year.

On Thursday, Aug. 20, Ashlie will serve as the keynote speaker for one of Heidelberg's longest-standing traditions: Opening Convocation.

Opening Convocation is part of Welcome Week at Heidelberg. Welcome Week showcases Heidelberg's many resources for academic, personal, and professional success and features activities designed to help students get the academic year off to a great start.

A dedicated science educator with nearly 20 years of experience, Ashlie has taught at Perkins High School in Sandusky, Ohio, since 2009. She teaches Honors Biology, Anatomy and Physiology, Forensic Science, and Unified Human Nutrition and Wellness, helping students develop a deeper understanding of science through engaging, hands-on learning.

In addition to her high school teaching responsibilities, Ashlie teaches six College Credit Plus (CCP) courses through the University of Findlay in Biological Sciences, Anatomy, Neuroscience, Health Sciences, and Education.

A two-time Heidelberg graduate, Ashlie earned bachelor's degrees in Biology and Adolescent-Young Adult Life Science Education before completing a Master of Education in Classroom Technology from Bowling Green State University. She also completed graduate coursework in Biology at Clemson University to qualify to teach CCP courses.

Beyond the classroom, Ashlie serves as advisor for the Perkins BioClub and is an active leader in the National Association of Biology Teachers (NABT), where she currently serves as High School Section Chair after previously serving as BioClub Section Chair. Throughout her career, she has also served as a varsity girls soccer coach, National Honor Society advisor, 4-H advisor, and Sunday School teacher.

Her commitment to excellence in science education has earned statewide and national recognition, including the 2019 NABT Outstanding Biology Teacher Award for Ohio. In 2024, Heidelberg recognized her professional achievements and service with the Young Alumni Achievement Award.

Ashlie lives in Clyde with her husband and their two sons.
