Faculty Pursuits: Week of Dec. 1, 2025

CERT new building Pam Faber

Dr. Pam Faber (Biology) is a member of the Seneca County Community Emergency Response Team, CERT. CERT hosted a ribbon-cutting ceremony on Nov. 24 at their new building just north of the Public Safety Building on the Seneca County fairgrounds. Pam did most of the fundraising for the building, and is also a member of the ARES Ham radio club and Red Cross Disaster Action Team, each providing emergency response services within Seneca and surrounding counties.  The new building will provide central housing for the CERT emergency vehicle and supplies as well as the boats, trailers and supplies for the Seneca County Water Rescue Team.

In January, Pam will be one of three CERT members taking over the responsibilities of the Coordinator of CERT.  Recently CERT provided traffic control with HU security for the Homecoming parade, and will do so again for May’s graduation procession to the stadium.

Dr. Julie O’Reilly (Communication & Gender Studies) has a chapter in the textbook, Communication Theory and Gen Z Popular Culture, edited by Kathleen Glenister Roberts and Jonathan Nichols-Pethick and published by Peter Lang (2025). Julie’s chapter is titled Double Vision: Netflix’s Maid and Feminist Standpoint Theory; it appears in the Culture, Power, Identity section of the textbook.

Dr. Desirae Matherly (English) was one of six invited alumni to speak at the 65th Anniversary of the East Tennessee State University (ETSU) Philosophy and Religious Studies Program in Johnson City, Tennessee, on November 15.

Barry Devine book

The James Joyce Society of New York is hosting the first official launch event for Dr. Barry Devine's book he co-edited with Ellen Scheible of Bridgewater State University. Teaching James Joyce in the Twenty-First Century is a collection of pedagogy essays designed to help people bring James Joyce's works into their classrooms and non-traditional teaching spaces like senior centers and even prisons.

The online launch event on Dec. 12 at 12:30 p.m. Eastern time is free to members of the society and anyone Barry (English) puts on the guest list. Here is the Info Link. (Don’t register,  just tell Barry to get on the guest list for free.)

A textbook co-authored by Dr. Lisa Kahle-Piasecki (Business Administration) with Dante Benito Castro Solano and Matt Bereza, which includes a chapter by Mildred Daniela Berrelleza Rendón, will be featured at the Guadalajara International Book Fair (FIL) — one of the most important literary and academic events in the world. "It’s an incredible honor for our team to see this work highlighted on such a global stage," Lisa said. This project reflects our shared commitment to strengthening cultural understanding, advancing meaningful dialogue, and supporting educators and students who engage with U.S.–Mexico relations.
