Removing barriers: Heidelberg MAC Program wins innovation award

Heidelberg University’s Master of Arts in Counseling (MAC) program has been honored with the 2026 Innovative Counselor Education Program Award by the North Central Association for Counselor Education and Supervision (NCACES). This award recognizes outstanding, innovative, and unique counselor education programs across the 13-state NCACES region.
The nomination highlighted the MAC program's commitment to making graduate education accessible and affordable. To support working professionals and students with full-time responsibilities, the program offers a streamlined schedule requiring campus visits just twice a week during most semesters. Additionally, MAC has developed key pathways to ease financial barriers:
The Bridge Program
The Bridge Program enables Heidelberg undergraduate psychology and criminology students to take master’s-level coursework at the undergraduate tuition rate, giving them a head start on their advanced degree. Five students have entered this bridge program for the 2026-2027 academic year. The Bridge program has also been extended to Tiffin University psychology and criminology students, and their first opportunity to enter the program is in the 2027-2028 academic year.
The HRSA Grant
Awarded for the fourth consecutive time, the U.S. Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) grant provides a $25,000 stipend to students during their internship, helping offset costs from unpaid placements. It also funds specialized training in tele-mental health and sand tray therapy.
The award nomination was supported by letters from Heidelberg Provost Dr. Courtney DeMayo Pugno and MAC graduate Dr. Ronee Rice, Chair of the Social Sciences Department at Tiffin University. Courtney praised the program’s student-centered approach and impressive 96% licensure exam pass rate. Ronee emphasized the faculty’s ongoing post-graduation mentorship and dedication to community continuing education.
Drs. Robin Bordner and Meagan McBride attended the 2026 NCACES Conference to accept the award on behalf of the program.
