Heidelberg Theatre’s ‘Spring Awakening’ explores the complexities of coming of age

What happens when the hopes, questions and uncertainties of adolescence collide with the expectations of the adult world? Heidelberg University Theatre’s upcoming production of Spring Awakening takes audiences on a powerful, emotionally charged journey through the challenges of growing up, finding one’s voice and navigating a world that doesn't always have the answers.

Performances are scheduled for Nov. 12-14 at 7 p.m. and Nov. 15 at 2 p.m. in Gundlach Theatre. Tickets are available online through Eventbrite.

Directed by Karla Kash, the Tony Award-winning musical features a compelling blend of rock music and storytelling as it explores themes of identity, love, sexuality, self-discovery and the consequences of silence. With a bold, contemporary score by Duncan Sheik and a book and lyrics by Steven Sater, Spring Awakening brings an unforgettable intensity to the stage, inviting audiences to reflect on the joys, struggles and vulnerabilities of coming of age.

Key supporting roles are being played by Grace Thomas as Ilsa, Sydney Mendez as Martha, Elijah Shiley as Hanchen and Rupert, Matt Strouse as Ernst and Reinhold, Bailey Grizzell as Thea, and Meg Amburbey as Anna.

Rounding out the cast are Simon Fletcher as Georg and Dieter; Deven Deskin as Otto and Ulbrecht, Karla Kash as the adult female and Scott Hunt as the adult male. Comprising the Ensemble are Lavanna Hamilton, Mia Puente, Diaunte Griffin and Wesley Nelson.
