Service trip to Nicaragua opens eyes

The Heidelberg group with Nicaraguan children from Outreach360.

For the fourth consecutive year, Spanish professor Cindy Lepeley took a group of  28 students on an alternative break trip to Jinotega, Nicaragua, in January. Working with the Outreach360 organization, the group was there to help teach English to local children. While the mission is to benefit the lives of the children, students who participated on the trip learned a lot themselves. The beauty of the mountainous city of Jinotega, combined with the positivity of the children and passion exhibited by the Outreach360 team, made the trip an eye-opening experience into a culture and way of life much different than the U.S.

Matt Cooper, a sophomore biology and chemistry major, uses flashcards teach English vocabulary words.
