Wounded Warrior football game has 'Berg connection

A day before the frenzy of Super Bowl 50 reaches its peak, there will be another game where emotions run just as high, but for different reasons.

The Wounded Warrior Amputee Football Team (WWAFT) will face off against NFL stars in a flag football game on Saturday, the day before the Super Bowl. The game will match up veterans who have lost limbs in Afghanistan or Iraq with more than 40 NFL alumni to raise awareness for amputee veterans and active duty soldiers.

Snoop Dogg and alumni from the Broncos, Browns, Colts, Eagles, Falcons, Rams, Packers, Patriots and 49ers will take the field alongside the military heroes.

The WWAFT game has an interesting Heidelberg connection. Just two years ago, former ‘Berg Trustee John Kelley was providing the same kind of leadership and vision for Heidelberg that he does for CereScan Corp. as its chairman and CEO. CereScan – a nationally recognized brain diagnostics and technology company – is a key sponsor for Saturday’s game.

“CereScan is honored to support such a worthy event,” said Kelley, who served on Heidelberg’s board from 2010-14 and delivered the 2010 commencement address. “It’s now our turn to serve the brave men and women who have sacrificed so much for our freedom.”

Through its “Invisible Brain Injury Project” and in partnership with the Tug McGraw Foundation, CereScan has been leading the charge toward accurate diagnosis and treatment of chronic Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) in military members and veterans. The WWAFT game provides a huge platform to increase awareness and support for the issue.
