Student writers place in annual literary competition

2024 Echo Student Literary Competition Results

Heidelberg student writers took second place in every category in this year's Echo Student Literary Competition.

Lexi Lang's poem, "A Lemon," took second place in poetry. Beatrice Fry's short story, "A Noise I Named Sam," took second place in fiction, as did Cecilia Groth's essay, “On Home (A Love Letter to the Church on the Corner),” which placed second in creative nonfiction.

The annual Echo Student Literary Competition is open to undergraduate students currently enrolled at Bethany College, Heidelberg University, Hiram College, Marietta College, the University of Mount Union, and Muskingum University. Prizes in each category are $150, $100, and $50. All winning and honorable mention entries will be published in the Echo Literary Anthology.

FIRST PLACE: Makayla Thomas, Hiram College, for “Down South Living”; “ODE TO MEGAN THEE STALLION SAYING, ‘I’M A BAD BITCH, AND I GOT BAD ANXIETY’ AND IT WENT UNHEARD”; and “Style in My Hair”

SECOND PLACE: Lexi Lang, Heidelberg University, for “A Lemon.”

THIRD PLACE: Rae Carruthers, University of Mount Union, for “Oh Momma”; “I've Had the Same Perfume Bottle in My Car Since I was 16”; and “Dinner's on the table!”

 

Fiction

FIRST PLACE: Chloe Laszlo, University of Mount Union, for “The Melody of the Inferno”

SECOND PLACE: Beatrice Fry, Heidelberg University, for “A Noise I Named Sam”

THIRD PLACE: Rayna Lambert, Hiram College, for “Moonlight Monologues”

 

Creative Nonfiction

FIRST PLACE: Lorna Metzger, Hiram College, for “Princess and the P(TSD)”

SECOND PLACE: Cecilia Groth, Heidelberg University, for “On Home (A Love Letter to the Church on the Corner)”

THIRD PLACE: Adam Ellis, Hiram College, for “Metamorphosis”
